Differences between us are often the most surprising points of connection. Why is it sometimes easier to be honest with a total stranger than with someone we know? Is this really honesty or just another performance?
Intimacy delves into the personal and often very intimate revelations that occur when strangers meet.
A few years ago, Adriano Cortese was living above a shop on a street filled with bars, cafes and restaurants, in Melbourne. One night, he decided he wanted to meet some new people...so he walked onto the street and introduced himself to strangers walking past.
It was the beginning of a night filled with intense personal dialogue and shared intimacy. Based on this event and subsequent meetings with various strangers, in Intimacy we witness one person as he experiences the intimate lives of others and is confronted with his own.
Ranters Theatre is interested in the nature of performance both in the theatre and outside of it.Intimacy promises to give the audience a truly intimate experience through both the subject matter of the show and the intimate style of the presentation.
"...theatrically fascinating. There's much use of silence and the flexibility of the form means the audience has to be on their toes to follow changes of character or the arrival of a new narrative...The show is about intimacy and that warmth remains despite the apparent loneliness of many of the characters." - Read Alanna Maclean's review in The Canberra Times
"Intimacy is a stunning psychological and theatrical achievement…We are all in emotional danger if we isolate our souls this extraordinary piece suggests." - Emer O’Kelly, Irish Independent.
"The performances in Intimacy are beautiful, honest and sublime, as is the play." - Holli Harms, Front Row Centre (NewYork)
"Adriano Cortese’s restrained and sharp direction is right on the money. All the elements; staging, lighting, sound; are unobtrusive and perfectly pitched. This is one of the cleverest and most enjoyable shows you will see in a while." - Prue Bentley, ABC Melbourne.
