Vincenzo Pirrotta

The Street in association with The Italian Cultural Institute Presents
Vincenzo Pirrotta: LA BALLATA DELLE BALATE
Original music by Giovanni Parrinello, performed live by Dario Sulis
influential and innovative voices of Italian theatre

Award-wining writer/performer Vincenzo Pirrotta returns to Australia with his critically acclaimed theatre work La Ballata Delle Balate (The ballad of the 'balàte) accompanied  live by percussionist Dario Sulis on the cajon.

La ballata delle balate is a story of a mafia man, a fugitive,  who tells a religious rosary in his bunker were the sorrowful mysteries are that of Christ’s passion and joyful mysteries are the ones of the 5.000 Mafia victims of the Cosa Nostra. In this delirium we encounter both mysticism and violence.  God's word, which the fugitive professes is pitted against the Mafia's brutal word which he actually puts into practice.

What drives a man to live alone, in humble conditions, despite the great wealth accumulated living as a mafia man? How is it possible for the mafia men to put together murders and prayers of love?

In the hideouts and private houses of the mafia men, from Aglieri to Provenzano, the police always found bibles and religious icons, pictures of the saints and papers where Christ’s words were noted.  In this work playwright Pirrotta examines how a man can read Jesus’ message of love for the enemy and at the same time decide to kill someone? Pirrotta worked his play drawing not upon the same old images of Mafia, rather writing a piece, a ballad, where poetry and music became the invisible river floating under this guilty chant.”

Playwright, theatre director and actor, Vincenzo Pirrotta studied at I.N.D.A. (Istituto Nazionale del Dramma Antico) in Syracuse and studied with Mimmo Cuticchio, who taught him the art of the Sicilian storytelling. Winner of several theatre awards, founder of the Esperidio theatre company, Vincenzo Pirrotta represents nowadays one of the most influential and innovative voices of Italian theatre.

Please note the performance will be in Italian with surtitles in English
