Street Talk

For me it starts with an idea – a metaphor or an image – that connects with something I care deeply about.” Tracy Bourne talks about Sheila, her new work in development, having a public showing at The Street on 18th December.

Three icons of the guitar world are bringing their incredible artistry to Australian audiences.

Wolfgang Muthspiel (Austria), Slava Grigoryan (Australia) and Ralph Towner (USA) are highly respected worldwide for their contributions to the guitar oeuvre, be it jazz, classical or world music. Coming together in 2005 for a one-off trio tour in Australia, Wolfgang, Slava and Ralph felt an instant personal and musical connection. Fifteen years, two CDs and countless tours later, they are returning to Australia performing new works penned by Towner and Muthspiel, as well as selections from their previous recordings: From a Dream and Travel Guide.

“…astounding virtuosity…. head-spinningly intricate ensemble passages…. handled with furious ease.
A
n evening not only of remarkable music but unusually close intimacy – an event not to be easily forgotten.” LIMELIGHT MAGAZINE

MGT - All hail from a classically trained background, however the technical prowess each has garnered from years of dedication to their craft is only utilised as a means to connect with the audience on an emotional level.  The aural landscapes created by this master guitar trio seem at times ‘orchestral’.  Perhaps it is the sheer beauty of the compositions combined with the variety of instruments that gives the ensemble its harmonically broad sound spectrum – Muthspiel plays classical and electric guitars, Grigoryan performs on classical and baritone guitars and Towner on classical and 12 string guitars.

“sublime skill, silky improvisation…. complete mastery of  tone and atmosphere…
here one was able to savour both the grittiness and the sophistication of the MGT sound in all its glory.”
THE WEST AUSTRALIA

Grigoryan’s virtuosity has earned him a cult following in Australia and Muthspiel’s reputation stretches well beyond the borders of his homeland, Austria. Both Grigoryan and Muthspiel share one musical hero in particular: the legendary Ralph Towner. The American-born Towner is a celebrated acoustic guitarist who also plays piano, synthesizer, percussion and trumpet. Towner is known as a truly inspirational innovator on the modern musical landscape - his ideas ever fresh, though they span a career of more than 30 years. He has made notable recordings of jazz, classical music, folk music, and world music.

For guitar enthusiasts and music lovers of all kinds, this ensemble is all about sharing the passion for music, and a chance to hear three generations of musicians performing together, yet with their distinct signature style.

“Towner is one of the few players who can balance a flawless technique
with a feeling and spirit that touches the listener on many levels”
CRUSADER NEWS

“Muthspiel’s tricky compositions have an unstoppable groove over which he unveils a solo of Schwarzenegger proportions...
These tunes go places, lots of them, and each is more interesting than the last” LIMELIGHT MAGAZINE

“Slava Grigoryan is a guitar player of uncommon originality and authority.
Musicality, expressivity and daring, …a singular talent”
THE NEW YORK TIMES

Have you heard the story about a moon crater being named after a jazz standard...?
An astronaut involved in the third Apollo mission was brother-in-law to cellist David Darling, who, like Towner, was in the Paul Winter Consort at the time.  A cassette of the Consort album ‘Road’, which contained Towner's compositions ‘Ghost Beads’ and ‘Icarus’, was taken on the moon mission.  The astronauts named two of the moon’s craters after these tunes and Icarus went on to become a jazz standard performed the world over.
