Venus in Fur by David Ives

“You don’t have to tell me about sadomasochism. I’m in the theatre.”

Director Thomas Novachek has adapted the scandalous 19th century  tale Venus in Furs for the stage. An erotic masterpiece, it charts an obsessive relationship between a man and the mistress to whom he becomes enslaved.

Eager to connect with contemporary audiences, Thomas wants to cash in on the success of Fifty Shades of Grey. But he’s finding it hard to cast his leading lady. Enter Vanda Jordan unannounced to audition, an enigmatic actress desperate to impress. As Thomas reluctantly agrees to audition her desire twists and turns on itself, blurring the lines between play-acting and reality forever.

Starring Joanna Richards (Boys Will Be Boys) as Vanda and Craig Alexander (Cold Light) as Thomas, this work has been produced across the globe. Caroline Stacey’s production opens this theatrical Pandora’s Box where nothing is as it seems - even desire. Nominated for Best Play at the 2012 Tony awards, Venus in Fur is a tantalising and unsettling exploration of sexual politics, gender and power, both on and offstage – an absolute audience dazzler. Intoxicating, erotic, and highly charged.

David Ives is an American playwright who has been writing for the stage for over 40 years. He is perhaps best known for his evening of one-act plays titled All In The Timing, and is also celebrated for his adaptations of 17th and 18th century classical verse comedies.

“Provides a seriously smart and very funny stage seminar on the destabilizing nature of sexual desire… The excitement in watching “Venus in Fur” is in not knowing exactly what the emotional and sexual stakes really are.” – The New York Times
