Canberra Wind Symphony: Why March?
A fascinating journey through one of the most inspirational and beloved styles of music for the large ensemble; the ‘March’.
In this first instalment for 2016, Canberra’s newest 40-piece orchestra takes you from the thrilling textural genius of Percy Grainger to the pompous splendour of Elgar, the ‘very British’ sounds of Kenneth Alford, the ‘March King’ himself American John Philip Sousa, and into sheer virtuosity from the pens of Australians Arthur Gullidge and Joe Cook.
If you’re thinking ‘Anzac Day’ you’re only partly right! The ‘March’ is a far more versatile concept than keeping troops in step, immerse yourself in scenes of splendour, ceremony, and intense emotion as the ways exemplary composers have utilised the genre to great expressive effect are revealed. Experience the captivating and engaging brilliance of forty passionate professional artists interactively sharing their love of live music performance with you.
The international Canberra Wind Symphony presents music created for its medium by the finest writers, showcasing the extraordinary sounds this instrumental combination produces. A popular feature of their 20th and 21st century repertoire is works by Australian composers. The freshest contributor to the international wind music colloquy, the Canberra Wind Symphony doesn’t just ‘put on concerts’ for audiences – you’re our guests and we’re all in this together!
As a foundation principle the Canberra Wind Symphony supports philanthropy through the arts.
