Costa/Putcha/Luke

Award-winning jazz and world music pianist and composer Dan Costa known for his profound musical expression and melodic sensibility returns to Australia to perform his album Beams (Gold Medal winner, Global music Awards 2024). Dan Costa will be joined on stage by talented Canberrans, Telugu-Australian drummer and composer Somesh Putcha (2024 ABC Jazz and Composer Commission), also launching his debut album Ever Playful and Canberran bassist James Luke adding to the trio’s performance.
 
Born in the UK to a Portuguese and Italian family, the classically trained Costa who took up jazz piano at the Académie de Musique Rainier III in Monaco continuing studies at Sir Paul McCartney’s Institute for Performing Arts and in Portugal, Brazil and the US. His musicality and originality has led him to play with some of the most respected names in jazz such as Ron Carter, Randy Brecker, John Patitucci and Mike Stern amongst others, and high praise from collaborators and Down Beat Magazine and All About Jazz. Dan describes his album Beams, accentuated by a South American flavour, as "a celebration of light in some key physical and metaphysical forms".

A rising star, Somesh Putcha creates fearless, curious and uplifting sounds. Musically he has been moved by the adventurous and spiritual nature of artists such as John Coltrane, Mark Guiliana, and his mentor Colin Stranahan. Inspired by the Hindu myth of Amrutamu, the elixir of life, and the poisonous Halahalamu, his album Ever Playful meditates on the duality of suffering and bliss, of challenge and growth.
 
Blending jazz improvisation, layered storytelling, and rhythmic dexterity, Putcha uses his heritage — both musical and cultural—as a vessel for personal reflection and connection.
