The Marschallin, a worldly and wise noblewoman, finds herself reflecting on the transient nature of youth and love when her young lover, Octavian, unexpectedly falls for the innocent and spirited Sophie. As these characters navigate the tangled threads of romance, duty, and social expectation, Strauss’s music captures every nuance of their longing and transformation with breathtaking sensitivity.

In this new interpretation, Sonia Anfiloff steps into the role of Octavian with strength and subtlety, balancing youthful intensity with emotional depth. Sarah Darnley-Stuart brings quiet dignity and complexity to the Marschallin, while Erika Simons offers a sincere and heartfelt portrayal of Sophie.

Directed by Caroline Stacey OAM, the production focuses on the emotional clarity and humanity at the heart of the piece. It is conducted by Rowan Harvey-Martin, leading a chamber ensemble in a finely crafted reduction of Strauss’s rich orchestration.
