Fred Smith & A Few Good Spooky Men

Present Urban Sea Shanties

“Urban Sea Shanties shanghaies the listener into a rich musical journey from the bars of Birmingham to the flooded streets of New Orleans, from the Mosques of Karachi to the Dapto Dog Track painting a musical picture of a wide, colourful world…”
John Hogan, National Film and Sound Archives

This powerful performance melding two of the most beloved juggernauts on the Australian festival scene focuses on songs from the award-winning album Urban Sea Shanties, recorded by Fred Smith in league with the Spooky Men's Chorale.

It's a collection of thinking men's’ drinking songs really.  There are moments of beauty and delicacy, but overall, it’s a celebration of misadventure - an exploration of the masculine psyche executed with a restrained buffoonery befitting the subject matter!

Fred Smith has been a favourite on the Australian festival circuit for years, much loved for his gentle wit, gift for story, whimsy and melody.
The Spooky Men’s Chorale is a vast, rumbling, steam powered and black clad behemoth somehow capable of rendering audiences moist eyed with mute appreciation and hapless merriment.

Fred, his band and this elite subset from the Spooky Men’s Chorale will combine to offer an unforgettable musical journey —Urban Sea Shanties — fun, thoughtful, beautiful, and properly silly.

“Switch off your finer sensibilities and tune into your base chakra”
Andy Copeman, Daily Planet Website
