Jason Bruer's Hammerhead

Evoking the sound and spirit of the late 50s and 60s Hard Bop movement, but reflecting a more contemporary take on this great music, internationally acclaimed saxophonist Jason Bruer and his sextet Hammerhead take no prisoners in their energetic, free-spirited approach to this music.

They were one of the featured bands in The Capital Jazz Project at The Street in 2015, playing to a sold out house. The Canberra Times hailed their performance as:

An outstanding set of uncompromising Hard Bop.

A repertoire made up mostly of Bruer’s original compositions reflects the re-imagining of the Hard Bop template to include an eclectic mix of Urban Jazz, Funk, Chamber Jazz and Latin styles. Featuring a stellar line up of Sydney’s finest musicians including pianist Greg Coffin, trumpeter Ray Cassar and alto sax and flute maestro Andrew Robertson (plus Brett Hirst on bass and Nic Cecire on drums), they have gained widespread notoriety for their exciting performances at festivals and venues around the country including Wangaratta, Thredbo, Canberra (at The Gods), Capital Jazz Project(Canberra) Wollongong and Wodonga. They also regularly perform around Sydney at Lazybones Lounge, Venue 505 and Foundry 616.

Their debut CD Mosaic (2014) was critically acclaimed in the national press and also released in the UK and Japan.
