Krama Brass Band (CYP)

Tradition Re-Imagined

Krama Brass Band is an emerging band established in 2023 by two Cypriot musicians, Andreas Theocharous and Nicholas Georgiou. The band features eight professional musicians – six wind instruments, guitar, and drums. Named for the Greek word ‘krama’, meaning ‘alloy’, the band’s conceptual background is inspired by the combination of elements and cultures. Krama composes and performs original music that combines traditional Mediterranean music with Western music, focusing on retaining the stylistic features of the traditional music.

Krama's musicians creatively integrate their Mediterranean origins with their education in Western music – their knowledge and skills in jazz and classical music merge with their local musical traditions – to suggest an alternative perspective on contemporary Cypriot music. Krama aspires to a new interpretation of local music, developed not by neglecting traditional sounds, but by enhancing Cyprus's multicultural origins and influences.

The band has performed at the 10th Cyprus Jazz & World Music Showcase 2023, at the Rialto Theatre's 25th anniversary celebration in May 2024, and at the Windcraft Music Fest in July 2024, receiving positive comments for its fresh sound, innovative ideas, and professionalism.

At the Street Krama will present original compositions inspired by the traditional music of Cyprus and the Mediterranean region, as well as arrangements of Cypriot traditional pieces.

Krama Brass Band presented original music that combines traditional music of the Mediterranean with Western music, while improvisations were also an important part of the performance. The members of the band draw on their knowledge and experience in jazz and classical music, offering their own contribution to the contemporary Cypriot music scene.
