Marston & Barrett
“Unfound Places”
Freedman Fellowship nominee Ben Marston (trumpet and laptop) and Australian National Jazz Awards semi-finalist Hugh Barrett (piano and rhodes) are launching their debut album “Unfound Places”. Here they combine to explore the possibilities that live remix bring to a improvisation setting. With Ben’s melodic sensibility and Hugh’s rich harmonic textural playing the pair create distinctly Australian ambient/minimalist jazz with an electronic edge.
The duo was initially inspired by Ben’s time studying in Norway with live remix pioneer Jan Bang. However Hugh’s vast experience playing with some of Australia and the world’s leading artists quickly help shape the project into something truly unique. The pair explore haunting songlike themes, textural soundscapes and rhythmic flourishes with the spontaneous energy that only live improvisation bring. They excite audiences with their discovery of new and “Unfound Places”.
"A wondrous journey of sonic delights!" - Brendan Clarke
"Marston & Barrett present an impressive array of approaches to the trumpet & keys duo - from acoustic piano & trumpet to spooky Jon Hassell harmonised trumpet to In A Silent Way-era Davis with Hancock/Corea and more. Even in the more unusual modalities, there's an attractive Australianness to the ambient/minimalist jazz sensibility." - Peter Hollo
