Meet the Makers: David Atfield
“She thinks I’m gay. And that I’m in love with you. And you know, I think she’s right – about both." – Exclusion by David Atfield
Join The Street’s Artistic Director Caroline Stacey in conversation with award-winning Canberra-based playwright David Atfield, the writer and director of Exclusion –a contemporary drama set in Canberra where two male federal ministers are in contention to become Prime Minister. Exclusion examines the meaning of equality, the complexities of sexuality and the exploitation of human vulnerabilities in the quest for power. In concentrating on politicians’ private lives, the play challenges the State’s right to legislate on people’s personal lives, while exploring the phenomenon of men who are married to women and also sleep with men, the ways their wives deal with this and the effect on the other man.
2018 marks David Atfield’s 26th year creating innovative works in Canberra. Exclusion was a project largely for mid-career artists. Caroline will explore with David the challenges of being a writer-director and producer in the ACT and his contribution to a body of work connected to the ACT's LGBTIQ community.
