Contemporary Composition, Collaboration & International Networking

Join us for a special event featuring inspiring conversation and networking with internationally recognised Peruvian composer Nilo Velarde, winner of the Casa de las Américas Composition Prize. Including a focus on his chamber opera Chiang, Pilgrim of Dreams, exploring migration, memory and identity, Nilo also will introduce his new composition, Peru: Copper Producer, Past and Present.
 
Nilo Velarde is recognized as one of Peru's most distinguished contemporary composers, with a catalogue that encompasses orchestral, chamber, choral, vocal, electroacoustic, ballet, and operatic works. His works have been performed by leading ensembles and cultural institutions throughout Latin America, Europe, and the United States As an academic, he has made a significant contribution to the development of higher music education in Peru.
 
This afternoon event will include a presentation by Nilo on his artistic journey, compositional approach, and major international projects; insights into creating new music, collaborating with performers, and developing an international career as a composer; discussion of recent works and current collaborations in Australia; an open Q&A session; and dedicated networking time, allowing participants to meet one another, exchange ideas, and explore future artistic collaborations.
 
The event is for professional musicians, composers, arts organisations, educators, students, and members of the public with interested in contemporary music and international artistic collaboration. With the aim of strengthening connections within Australia's music community and fostering new relationships between Australian and Latin American artists, look forward to a lively exchange.
