The Street's Climate Change Commitment and Compliance
Leading with action: The Street Theatre is committed to addressing climate change by embedding regulatory reporting and compliance into every facet of our operations. Our recent initiatives and ongoing dedication to reducing our carbon footprint set the standard for arts organisations across Australia.
In 2020-2021, we developed a comprehensive plan to transition The Street's theatrical lighting systems from halogen to LED, aligning with the ACT Government’s Sustainable Energy Policy. This proposal was submitted to ArtsACT and the ACT Government in 2022, marking a significant step in our journey toward net-zero emissions.
Our commitment extends beyond lighting. Since 2015, we’ve upgraded our foyer lighting to energy-efficient LEDs, and our public bathrooms feature high water conservation systems with sensor lighting, ensuring we minimize energy and water use.
To further reduce our carbon footprint, we’ve minimised the production of printed materials, opting for digital communication through email and our website. We’ve also implemented rigorous waste management practices, recycling materials like paper, cardboard, plastics, and more through partnerships with Veolia, JJ Richards, and other responsible providers.
We ensure all gas appliances are on timers and will transition to electric as they require replacement, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.
Our creative, production, and administration teams are dedicated to reducing power and resource waste, reusing existing stock, and sourcing local materials for sets and costumes to minimise transportation impacts.
The Street operates under stringent principles that reflect our commitment to the ACT Government’s climate change objectives and federal initiatives toward net zero. We actively engage with our community and stakeholders to lead by example, ensuring The Street remains a beacon of environmental responsibility in the arts sector.
