A celebration of the Tenor Saxophone/Guitar collaborations in Jazz

The guitar and tenor saxophone enjoyed a close relationship even before the invention of the amplifier, which dates back to the 1930’s; this is exemplified in the recordings of Django Reinhardt and Coleman Hawkins.

However, it was the electrification of the guitar that began exciting collaborations involving the two instruments. The guitarist could not only assume the role of soloist alongside his tenor saxophonist companion, but also work alongside the tenor to provide a new and exciting accompaniment.

A case in point being tenor players such as  Sonny Rollins and Stan Getz, who stated they preferred the partnership where space and rhythm were created by the guitar.

Con Campbell and Chris Johnstone have long enjoyed this type of musical collaboration since they first met at the Canberra School of Music in 1997. Con going on to not only win the James Morrison jazz Scholarship but recording with the trumpet maestro himself.

Join them for a night of celebrating musical creativity when these two instruments are combined and joined by an outstanding rhythm section provided by Brendan Clarke (Double bass) and Mark Sutton (Drums).

Together they will pay tribute to some of the best recordings documented by famed record labels such Blue Note, Prestige and Riverside.

A night not to be missed!
