Ruth O’Brien: Songs for Abby EP launch
Canberra singer-songwriter, Ruth O’Brien, lovingly invites you to the launch of her second EP, Songs for Abby.
Funded by one of the artsACT Homefront Grants in 2020, Ruth wrote and recorded these four acoustic love songs with an all-Canberra musical team.
After the bleak few years of the pandemic, Ruth wanted to create a musical work that was both relatable and light-hearted.
It’s no secret that these songs have been written to and about Ruth’s cats, Abby and Monti (also known as Kitmas and Chicken). Ruth’s ambition with this project was to capture both the tension and the pure joy that can arise when cohabiting with furry lounge lions.
Pet-owners will confirm that there are equally as many laughs as there are scratches on furniture, trips to the vet and unfortunate jobs related to cleaning up excrement. But it’s all worth it…because they’re adorable. These songs transcend this feline filial bond to capture wider, universal themes, emotions and the didactic nature of relationships.
The recording of the EP has been a pure labour of love for Ruth and her Canberra-based musical team comprising David Pendragon (sound engineer and producer), Jack Buchanan (sound engineer), Victor Rufus (guitarist and arranger), Julia Howarth (cellist) and Matt Nightingale (double bassist).
Ruth’s sweet, girly yet strong vocal tone combined with the warmth and tenderness in these lyrics will make for a beautiful, cozy, and fun evening for all ages (though there may be the occasional swear word!)
Ruth is calling cat-lovers far and wide and come and be a part of this love-filled evening to launch her newest tunes into the world. Expect lots of laughs, stories, pictures, and of course, good music!
